What the restoration does

• Finds damage automatically. A detection network from Microsoft's research project Bringing Old Photos Back to Life (CVPR 2020, MIT licence) marks scratches, creases, cracks and dust specks.
• Repairs it. The MI-GAN inpainting model fills each damaged area from its surroundings, tile by tile, so the repair keeps the photo's full resolution.
• Fixes fading and colour cast. Levels are stretched back to full contrast, and yellow or brown tints from ageing are neutralised.
• Reduces grain and scan noise, then sharpens gently.
• Optionally colourises black-and-white and sepia prints — it's switched on automatically when a photo looks monochrome.

Every step is optional, and Show detected damage highlights exactly what was repaired.

Private by design

Old family photos are personal. Here, every model is downloaded to your browser and runs on your device — your pictures are never uploaded. The first restoration downloads about 100 MB of models, which are cached for next time.

Getting the best restoration

• Start with a good scan — 600 DPI for standard prints, 1,200 DPI for small ones. Clean the glass first; dust on the scanner becomes dust in the photo.
• Crop off borders and the scanner bed before restoring.
• Large tears or missing corners may need a second pass with the Magic Eraser, painting over what's left.
• Faces are restored like the rest of the photo, without inventing new facial detail — what you see is still your photo.
