Four ways to change a background

  • None (transparent): a clean cutout for logos, stickers, slides and design work. Export as PNG or WebP to keep the transparency.
  • Colour: pure white for marketplace product shots, or any brand colour for profile pictures and thumbnails.
  • Blur: keep the real scene but soften it, so the subject pops.
  • Image: place the subject on a photo of your choice — that image stays on your device too.

An edge softness slider helps the cutout sit naturally on its new background.

How it works

The editor uses an open segmentation model (ISNet, via the @imgly/background-removal library) to predict which pixels belong to the main subject. The model downloads to your browser on first use (about 40–80 MB, then cached) and runs locally. The editor then refines the mask — keeping fine hair semi-transparent while snapping solid areas fully opaque — before compositing the new background.

Getting a clean cutout

  • Choose photos with clear contrast between subject and background.
  • Fine hair, glass and see-through fabric are the hardest parts for any model — soften the edge slightly, or use the dedicated Background Remover, which has erase and restore brushes for touch-ups.
  • For marketplaces, read our white-background product photo guide for size and framing rules.

How to use it

Change Background in four steps

  1. 1

    Drop in a photo

Tap Remove background — the subject is detected on your device.

  3. 3

None, a colour, a blur or your own image. Adjust edge softness.

  4. 4

PNG or WebP keeps transparency; JPG fills it with a colour.

FAQ

Change Background questions

How do I make a photo background white?

Remove the background, choose Colour, pick white (#ffffff) and apply. Export as JPG for the smallest file or PNG for maximum quality.

Can I keep a transparent background?

Yes. Choose None, apply, then download as PNG or WebP. JPG cannot store transparency.

Is my photo uploaded to remove the background?

No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and runs on your device. The photo never leaves it.

Why does the first run take a while?

The first time, your browser downloads the segmentation model (roughly 40–80 MB). It's cached afterwards.
