How the Magic Eraser works

When you paint over part of a photo, the editor sends that area — and a margin of the surrounding scene — to MI-GAN, an inpainting network published by Picsart AI Research. It's small enough (about 28 MB) to run inside a web browser with WebAssembly, yet good at continuing textures such as sky, sand, grass, water and walls. Pixels you didn't paint stay exactly as they were.

Because the model runs on your phone or computer, the photo never leaves it. The first time you use the eraser your browser downloads the model; after that it's cached and starts much faster.

What it's great at — and where to be careful

  • Great: tourists and passers-by, power lines, litter, stickers and logos, small text, dust spots, skin blemishes, and objects on plain or natural backgrounds.
  • Works with a second pass: larger objects. Erase the bulk first, then brush again over any smudge.
  • Harder: big objects in front of detailed, regular patterns (brick walls, text, faces behind the object). The AI invents plausible pixels, but it can't know what was really there.

Every erase is a single undo step, so you can try freely and press Ctrl+Z if a result isn't right.

Tips for clean results

  • Cover the whole object including its shadow and reflection — leftovers are what give an edit away.
  • Zoom in for small objects and use a smaller brush near important edges.
  • Leave a little margin around the object rather than tracing it tightly.
  • Finish with a filter or Auto Enhance in the same editor so the repaired area blends into the photo's overall look.

FAQ

Magic Eraser questions

Is this magic eraser really free?

Yes. There's no sign-up, watermark, daily limit or paid tier. The AI runs on your own device, so there's no per-image cost to pass on.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The inpainting model is downloaded to your browser and runs locally with WebAssembly. Your photo is never sent to a server.

Why does the first erase take longer?

The first time, your browser downloads the eraser model (about 28 MB). It's cached afterwards, so later erases start in a second or two.

Can it remove people from photos?

Yes, especially people in the background. Cover the whole person and their shadow. Large people close to the camera may need a second pass over any smudges.

Ready? Your photo never leaves.

Free, no sign-up, no watermark.
