Why convert JPG to PNG?

JPG uses lossy compression — every save discards a little image data to keep the file small, and repeated edits/re-saves compound that loss. PNG is lossless: once converted, the pixels stay exactly as they are no matter how many times you open or re-save the file. PNG also supports transparency, which JPG cannot represent at all, so it's the right target format if you plan to edit the image further, layer it over other content, or just want to stop losing quality on every save.
