How to Make a 3D Photo (Parallax Effect) from a Single Picture

Quick answer: A 3D photo (also called a 2.5D or parallax photo) is made from one picture by estimating how far away each pixel is with an AI depth model, then moving a virtual camera slightly so near things shift more than far things. Pick a photo with a clear foreground subject and a distant background, choose a gentle camera move such as a circle or slow zoom, set the focus distance to the subject, and export a short looping GIF or MP4.

How single-image 3D works

The editor runs Depth Anything V2 on your device to predict a depth map β€” a greyscale image where bright means near and dark means far. To animate, it renders each frame by moving a virtual camera: every output pixel looks up where it came from in the original photo, displaced in proportion to its depth relative to the focus distance. Near objects slide more than the background, which your brain reads as depth. Softening the depth map slightly avoids tearing at object edges.

Choosing a camera move

Start at 30–50% amount. Larger moves reveal areas the original camera never saw, which are filled by stretching nearby pixels.

Picking the right photo

  • Distinct layers: a person, flower or product in front, scenery behind.
  • Avoid glass, reflections, fine hair against busy backgrounds and flat scenes such as walls or documents β€” depth models can't separate them.
  • Sharp subjects give the strongest 3D impression.

Exporting for social media and websites

  • Video (MP4 or WebM): best for Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts; smaller and smoother than GIF. Crop to 9:16 first with AI Smart Crop.
  • GIF: plays everywhere, including email; keep it to 480–720 px and 2–3 seconds to keep the file size down.
  • Loop length: 2–4 seconds feels natural; the move returns to its start so the loop is seamless.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 3D photo maker free and private?

Yes. Depth estimation and rendering run in your browser; the photo is never uploaded and there's no watermark.

What is a depth map?

A greyscale image showing how far each part of a photo is from the camera β€” bright for near, dark for far. AI models can now estimate one from a single ordinary photo.

Why do edges stretch in my 3D photo?

The camera reveals areas hidden behind objects in the original. Lower the amount or choose a gentler move to minimise stretching.

Can I post a 3D photo on Instagram?

Yes. Export a video (MP4 where supported), ideally cropped to 4:5 or 9:16, and upload it as a Reel or post.

Does it work on any device?

It works in modern desktop and mobile browsers. Rendering is quicker at 480 or 720 px; 1080 px takes a little longer.

Try it free: the AI 3D Photo runs entirely in your browser β€” no upload, no account, no watermark.
