Getting the smallest file that still looks good

File size and visual quality trade off against each other — the compressor updates the preview and the exact resulting file size live as you move the quality slider, so you can find the lowest size that still looks right for your use case (web page, email attachment, upload limit) instead of guessing.

WebP generally compresses more efficiently than JPG at the same visual quality, so try switching format if you need a smaller file. Since JPG and WebP-without-alpha both lack a true transparency channel in this exporter, transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose. Everything happens locally via the Canvas API — your photo is never uploaded.
